For many years I have wanted to exhibit my work at the Pan African Film Festival. But always felt my work wasn't "good enough", "who would want to buy something I made :( and on and on and on. Well this year I took the leap OVER apprehension, fear and failure. And guess freakinfratftitter what? I succeeded! I sold my contemporary designed quilts, my original artwork, fashion accessories and original jewerly designs. People appreciated my work. And I appreciated them for appreciating me and my work! OK, I just finished Elizabeth Gilbert's book, EAT, LOVE, PRAY. But, the people that came to my booth, at the festival, made me feel validated as an artist/designer, and gave me inspiration and clarity to want to do my best (Obama) in creating artwork people can connect with, appreciate and is inspirational.
You know, I have a website too. And just when I think I'm on top of my emails, blog, website, facebook, twitter, Etsy and Pinterest accounts, I overlooked this email. Below are two pictures of "Shoulders", an original art piece I made adhearing newspaper to muslin, then seleted different shades of fabrics to create the sillouetts, and machine stitched them together. And the email from the Man/customer, who brought it at the Pan African Film Festival:
I recently purchased this piece from you for my daughter. I had a conversation with her about the shoulders we stand on and our preparing our shoulders for those who follow us. And then...I saw your work. I am very happy with this piece which has a great deal of significance for me and my kids. Thanks for your artistry.
